Morning comes to the Tetons

Three old men, I mean students sit in the gloom of the lodge sitting room. First ones up. Michael, Mac, Sam.
"What time did you get to sleep?" I asked.
"Not bad. Two in the morning East Coast time."
I laughed. These guys will get a fine slumber tonight!
The light outside is not to be believed. The canyon hills are khaki, tan, yellow, an overall gray that wakens  with the overhead sky which itself shimmers with a living if invisible quality. In the distance the dark peaks of the Teton range already are draped in heavy early snow. Even in the bus ride in last night from airport to camp, the ebullient 8th graders could feel the difference in how the far West expresses time and space.
All is well in Jackson!  Stay tuned for more postings from the field later today.

Looks like a beautiful day is in store for the group.

Touchdown, Denver!

Unsolicited Praise--Always the Best Type

She leans over my seat. Her name is Erit, and she is a Jerusalem native who has traveled to 42 countries and 36 states in America, cooking for a living all over the world. Her accent is heavy, her smile is big, her eyes sparkle.
"So," Erit says, "you are with this group?!"
   "Yes."
   "These are great kids."
   "Really? You think so?"
"Yes, very polite. I ask your name and the young man says your name is Mister Shapiro. He is not supposed to address his teachers by their first name. I see kids all over the world and they are not as polite as these kids. They are so well-behaved on this flight. Not selfish. So many kids these days selfish. This is a great thing that you and the other teachers are taking them to this far away place. So what kind of trees will they see? This is a good thing for them. When you are with young people, you stay young."

On the first leg Mr Agnor does his Eighth Grade Horse Whispering--the gang is quite quiet actually!
